I guess it depends on what nation you are talking about. In the US I would probally side with the conservatives on most issues. Liberals while I understand their goals the nation is not ready for their radical changes.
Liberals in the US tend to have great idea's and think in Utopian terms. The problem is, the rest of the world is not this way. If liberals were to get their way with legislation in this country then business's would have a much harder time doing business. Why would a company do business here if the goverment taxes them to death. Why not build your factory in Mexico or China? We have to remember we can go down the Utopian road but will we be able to maintain our economic edge. Capitalism and Liberalism clash on so many levels. However Capitalism is the best system we have now. You cannot have half the world practicing Capitalism and the other not ... We saw what happen to world in the late 80's and early 90's. Capitalism is stronger then Socialism in economics. Liberals tend to support many of the ideas of socialism. This is why I must side with Conservative on most issues. I do think the liberals have it right when it comes to the enviroment. I also do think Liberals are right about war. I disagree with them on war when it involve rogue nations that kill and murder their own citizens. Sometime Liberals will just talk to these people until their faces turn blue. Sometime they lack the will to act. But on the other hand conservatives tend to act to rash at times. In my opinion is Liberals are just as dangerous as conservatives. To much of either is bad for a nation. I myself lean more conservative. But I also know I need liberals around me to help me see the other side of arguments.

That's the point!
And I can easily see that meaning of terms can change in nations. A liberal is called so far from socialism in general literature though.
As a "romantic socialist" I can only say that what world needs are respect & affection lol
